Sweaty palms / hyperhidrosis - VATS @ National Heart Centre

Hello,

Not sure if anyone will ever read this but this is solely to share with fellow hyperhidrosis sufferers who are looking to do surgery as an option. This is because there are hardly ANY recent information on surgeries like this and it's not easy to make an informed choice unless you seek a doctor regarding this. So hopefully anyone out there reading this would benefit from it :-)

Disclaimer: This is based solely on my own experience with NHC but do note that everyone's conditions are different. This is just to make known of my journey so please do consult a doctor should you be seriously considering and ensure that surgery is your best option.

Sweaty palms seems minor to most people but it's a major problem in my life. And in sunny Singapore, I just can't help but sweat. I've sweaty palms/feet for as long as I can remember, as little as 5 years old. At 14, I've decided I needed to do something about it because it was really bad. I got myself referred to a specialist (national skin centre) and that's when I was introduced to do iontophoresis. At that time it was so new and I was the first batch of patients to experiment it.

After 10 years of iontophoresis treatment, I've decided that it is probably a good time to seriously consider VATS (aka video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery or ETS) as it's a hindrance in my working life cause the national skin centre is only open during working hours. Furthermore, I experienced side effect of dehydration and lethargy after every treatment.

I requested for SGH but somehow I got referred to the National Heart Centre Singapore on 24/01. During the consultation with the doctor, he shared about the risks of doing this surgery (horner's syndrome, compensatory sweating, infections etc). There would be an MC of 2 weeks given Once I have acknowledged these risks, I proceed to do medical tests such as Xray and blood test.

Went back to NHC for a pre-admission test. Met with a doctor who will checked my suitability on anaesthesia as it will be used during surgery (so you'll be unconscious when the surgery is performed).

Surgery day!

Had my surgery at about 10/11am and was pushed back into ward by 1pm. Experienced pressure on my chest even after 3 days of the surgery. It is getting better as days go by so hopefully it will fully go away soon. The incisions are a little pain but probably at a scale of 4 out of 10.

No sweat experienced anywhere on my body so far. Probably because I have not exposed myself to any heat yet. Let's see how it goes! Praying for minimal compensatory sweating :(

Even though im not close to him, the news were really shocking to me. How can someone so fit and active, be gone so quickly? Life is so unpredictable that it scares me. Could not sleep at all last night. Its a wake up call to me. Where do I wanna go after I die? May you RIP.
